Mary remembers Broadway musicals, mostly touring shows at Cincinnati’s long-gone Shubert Theatre, as high points from her childhood.
The original cast recording from “The Sound of Music” was the backdrop for many a dinner at home.
But it was a 1969 production of George Bernard Shaw’s “Saint Joan” at Playhouse in the Park that rocked teenaged Mary’s world. “I was knocked flat by the power of what I saw on stage,” says Mary. “I became a volunteer usher so I wouldn’t miss a show, and from that moment on, the arts became an essential ingredient in my life.”
Mary’s love for all art forms led to decades of volunteer service to ArtsWave, where she is currently a Life Trustee. Mary believes her life is forever enriched by the quality and variety of arts in our region, which is why she and her late husband, Ron Kull, have made ArtsWave part of their legacy. “Great art speaks to us in profound ways. We want to be sure future generations get to continue the conversation.”
